Routers perform an important function for computers and the internet.  A router is a computer device.  It forwards data packets across computer networks.  A data packet is a basic unit of communication over a digital network. A packet is also called a datagram, a segment, a block, a cell or a frame.

A router can also block unauthorized access to a network via the use of a firewall.  A firewall is set up to protect a computer from any unwanted access, such as that from hackers.

Teach your dog to lie down. Your dog can learn to lie down at any age.  The most important thing to remember about training your dog is to have fun with him.  Your dog will learn more and faster when he has  fun.

Teaching your dog to lie down may help keep your dog safe.  You can train your dog to understand the command “Down!” along with a hand and arm signal.  Use a hand motion that looks like you’re pushing the air down with your palm.

Teach your dog to lie down by treating him with a favorite snack, or part of his meal. If you choose a treat he really likes, he will associate learning with a good taste.  Training will be fun time.

First, kneel down and encourage your dog to lie down by bring your hand (holding a treat) to the floor or ground.  You may stroke his back to encourage him but don’t press hard or yell at him.  Once he lies down, give him a treat right away!  He will associate performing the command “Down!” with getting a treat.  That makes him happy.

Once he understands the command, play with him and have fun with the command “Down!”  Repeat the command faster and give him a treat each time he performs it.  He will have fun and may be excited.  You may see him smile.

Now you can add the hand and arm signal to the command.  Use the hand and arm signal when you command “Down!” He may learn to perform the command from your signal without hearing you say the word!

To create a hotspot using an XP operating system, start by connecting the laptop to the Ethernet cable. Click open the “Control Panel” on your computer, then select “Network Connections.” After right-clicking wireless adapter, select “Properties.” Select Windows to configure the wireless network setting. Add by clicking the “Preferred Networks” section. Create a name and password, then select a security type for the network. (Note: If you choose not to establish a security type for your wireless hotspot, your unsecured connection may be available to remote users.) Finally, select the “Advanced” tab, then choose to connect with “ad hoc networks.”

Return to the Network Connections area as you close each option by selecting “OK.” Click on the “Properties” section, then select “Advanced” options. Choose to allow your computer to connect with other network users through your Internet connection.

To turn your laptop into a hotspot using a Windows Vista operating system, start as above by connecting your computer to the modem. Then, select the Control Panel and click “Networking and Sharing.” Select a new connection setup, then choose the option for creating “an ad hoc network” as before. Select a name and security key, and confirm what type of security the network has. Finalize by clicking the choice of establishing Internet connection sharing.

Costs to purchase a new computer continue to decline, but mystical visions of the “$100 computer” haven’t become true reality. However, refurbished computers may offer an upgrade from your old computer. Find refurbished computers offered in online auctions, such as those on eBay. Choose sellers with a high percentage of positive feedback. For extra safety, select only those sellers located in the United States. Ask questions before making a purchase.

Use caution when purchasing an ultra-cheap netbook from an international seller. Always check the seller’s feedback and ask questions. For example, your cheap netbook may not have an operating system or some page-reading abilities you take for granted.

Large companies usually provide their employees with up-to-date hardware and continuous software upgrades. If you’ve ever worked at a large company, you know the tech support team on a first-name basis. They’re always dropping by to make sure you’ve got the latest hardware and the latest upgrades.

Refurbished computers make good financial sense for many people. Entrepreneurial resellers buy up obsolete computers at almost no cost from large companies. The hard disks of these computers get wiped clean, and the reseller adds some new software, such as Open Office. If you’re not hankering for the latest, smallest, thinnest laptop, buying a refurbished desk top computer—along with the cost of an annual warranty contract—can cost you $100 or less, including shipping!

When checking your email don’t keep reading the same email over and over- read it once, act on it, and move on with your day. If you use social networking sites, allot a certain amount of time each day, and have a goal in mind. Don’t just sit on the internet reloading Twitter all day- have a purpose for being on there. For example, respond to all messages left for you, decide how many people you are going to connect with, and update your status.

Everyone needs a break in order to clear his or her mind. Don’t feel bad if you get sidetracked and end up surfing a news website for a few minutes. But just make sure you have actually completed some work before you do that. If after every hour of work you need a 10-minute internet break- that is fine, as long as your boss isn’t going to get upset. Taking a quick break won’t hurt your productivity, and in fact the mental rest could help increase it because you’ll feel refreshed.

So when keeping productivity in mind, make sure you are actually getting work done. Have concrete work goals set for each day, and make sure you are checking things off of your list before you start to surf the web.

There are many laptops to choose from- PC’s, Macbooks, Linux-based netbooks- and it can get overwhelming. Instead of comparing the different models it’s easy to be tempted to just buy something and get it over with.

However, choosing a laptop is not a choice that should be made lightly. Users should consider the features, how they intend to use the laptop, and the price before making a decision.

For example, a 16” screen may seem cool, but if you are a college student, do you really want to lug that big laptop around campus? Likewise, a 10” netbook may seem appealing due to the size and the cost, but if you are in graphic design you have an easier time completing your work on a larger screen.

The cost of a laptop should also be considered. If you come across a really cheap laptop you may be tempted to scoop it up but before you do- look at the features. Cheap laptops may have a low storage capacity and poor graphics. And if you plan on watching movies and saving picture files that cheap laptop might be useless to you.

On the other hand, if you just need a laptop to send a few emails and save a few documents, then you don’t have to go all out and buy the priciest model; a basic laptop will suffice.

When choosing a laptop it’s important to look at the big picture and not focus in too much on one aspect. Evaluate what your needs are first, and then go from there.

Though this technology is great, it can be lonely working at home alone. That’s where wireless hot spots come into the picture. Hot spots allow solo entrepreneurs and independent workers to get out and interact with people, without the expensive costs of setting up a separate office.

Locations such as coffee shops, fast food restaurants, bookstores, and even copy shops offer hot spots. Some offer free Wi-Fi hot spots, while others require you to pay by the hour.

If you decide to work from a place that offers free Wi-Fi then you should plan on patronizing the business. Don’t just setup camp in someone’s place of business without contributing anything. Not only might you get kicked out, but also it’s just a poor practice. If you are going to take up space and use electricity for hours at a time- buy something. It doesn’t have to be a large purchase- a cup of coffee or a magazine will do; just make a good faith effort.

Also, if you decide to use this type of work arrangement, be considerate of others and don’t talk loudly on your cell phone.  If you know you have to talk on the phone a lot, then consider working from home. Working from places with hot spots is best for people who just need to type on their laptops in order to get work done.
