Global Financial Connections

Technology lets us read the news around the world from the comfort of  a laptop or desk computers. The Sydney Morning Herald‘s Eric Johnson reports on Commonwealth Bank’s (CBA.AX) decision to raise home mortgage rates by 45 basis points, or almost one-half a percent. According to Ralph Norris, Commonwealth Bank’s CEO, raising rates was the right thing to do for the bank’s shareholders. Raising rates was instrumental in the bank’s 13 percent rise in profits during the first half of the fiscal year. Reporter Barry FitzGerald reports on the price of copper and explosive increase in metals  prices in today’s news. Finally, SMH also ran an Associated Press article  in which Fed chief Ben Bernanke. Mr. Bernanke tells the world our inflation rates remain “quite low.”

Where does the information in these articles intersect? Australia’s economy reflects many concerns of the globe. The metals index increased by more than 19 percent in 2010 according to the USGS. Metals and mining companies comprise the largest Australian industry. More than 600 Aussie companies, including ASX, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, engage in mineral exploration and production. Conclusion: Rising commodities prices often signal increasing inflationary pressures.

Australia’s conventional long-term home loan rates average more than 7 percent vs. advertised U.S. rates of about 5 percent. Chairman Bernanke acknowledged that low mortgage rates aren’t stimulating home purchases in the U.S. Conclusion: Mortgage rates may rise.

The world’s long-term interest rates remain at historically low levels. According to BNY Standish Mellon Advisors, the world’s global debt markets’ total size increased from about USD 4 trillion in 1990 to about USD 34 trillion in 2009. Conclusion: Unprecedented expansion of the global debt markets is a great cause for concern.

In November 2010, interest rates on 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds returned less than 3 percent. In February 2011, 10-year Treasuries return about 3.75 percent. Bond prices decline as interest rates rise. Rising inflation, evidenced by increasing commodities prices like metal and oil, has historically stimulated higher interest rates. In February 2011, Australia’s 10-year government bond pays lenders 5.73 percent. Conclusion: Global interest rates are likely to rise.

Learning About Online Surveys and Your Needs

The topic of online surveys can bring a number of advantages to any business. On a company’s website, there are plenty of opportunities for surveys to be implemented if they have not been already placed. Yet, there are some guidelines that should be looked into to realize the results.

Take advantage of such guidelines to get the most out of survey tools. The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has released a number of guidelines that should be taken into account. For instance, the IAB covers limiting the number of times in which customers are exposed to surveys. These and other general guidelines should be consulted in order to get the most out of online surveys.

Use online surveys to specifically target customers’ opinions. Some of the most effective surveys are incredibly simple. For example, asking the visitor if a help page is useful, and then giving (optional) room to include an explanation, is a great way to get feedback. Many websites use these, which offer businesses insight into how they may improve such parts of a site, if needed.

Of course there is a place for longer surveys. These are especially helpful when previous and loyal customers are targeted. Surveys like these can ask open-ended questions regarding some aspect of the business or website, or use scales to numerically crunch the results. It is easy to see that there is a great amount of versatility with survey tools, for any information that a business may have in mind to gain.

There are endless possibilities in regards to what can be achieved with online surveys. Going over the guidelines issues will help take full advantage of their power. You can have immediate access to the insights that customers and visitors can offer. You can’t overlook how easy, efficient, and effective survey tools are for a business.

Use Your Computer To Get Your Plumbing Fixed Now

Use your computer, Internet connection and technology to identify the plumber specialist you need. Before your plumbing emergency manifests, use plumber networks to solve your plumbing problems now. Lifestyle

Finding a plumber is usually an urgent matter. Tim Sargent, a contractor, suggests “When your fifty year old plumbing breaks, maybe it explodes, you need a plumber now.  The best person to call is someone who knows more than Uncle George.  Realtors and construction companies know what plumbers are best for the job.  Get recommendations before you need a plumber.”

Carl Watson, a retired plumber, says “Get estimates for your job.  You won’t ask about why it was so expensive later. References are a must.”

Natalie Evans, a realtor in Connecticut, agrees.  “A real estate professional is in touch with many people in the community, in a variety of residential and office buildings.  Ask around.”

Peter Kirkorian, a  Massachusetts plumber, says “Many people are referred to us, and we keep a directory listing.  Plumbing associations also recommend our business to new customers, like ALocalPlumber.com.  Everyone probably goes to the directory if they don’t know a plumber!”  Inquiring what resources people can contact, Kirkorian suggests the PlumbingWeb Network. The plumbing forum is also popular.

We asked several people if they have a current copy of the yellow pages.  Darlene, a neighbor, quipped, “Do I even know who the phone company is anymore? I use my wireless netbook and go on the Internet for listings.”

What if you want to D.I.Y.?  Tony Cipriano, a plumber in Connecticut, recommends “If you are experienced, go ahead and fix the plumbing yourself.  You should know that many jobs we see happen because somebody tried to do it herself.”  He agrees that many do-it-yourself tutorials are excellent, and likes video plumbing tutorials on the Internet.  “I got a refresher course the other day on how to update old plumbing.”

Create Your Own Wireless HotSpot

Create a wireless hotspot with your laptop. Electing to share your connection helps family and friends gain wireless Internet access. If you would like to share a wired Internet connection from your computer with others, it’s a relatively easy task for most operating systems. Your computer must have a wireless card to communicate with other computers’ wireless cards. You also need an Internet Ethernet cable to complete the task.

To create a hotspot using an XP operating system, start by connecting the laptop to the Ethernet cable. Click open the “Control Panel” on your computer, then select “Network Connections.” After right-clicking wireless adapter, select “Properties. Select Windows to configure the wireless network setting. Add by clicking the “Preferred Networks” section. Create a name and password, then select a security type for the network. (Note: If you choose not to establish a security type for your wireless hotspot, your unsecured connection may be available to remote users.) Finally, select the “Advanced” tab, then choose to connect with “ad hoc networks.”

Return to the Network Connections area as you close each option by selecting “OK.” Click on the “Properties” section, then select “Advanced” options. Choose to allow your computer to connect with other network users through your Internet connection.

To turn your laptop into a hotspot using a Windows Vista operating system, start as above by connecting your computer to the modem. Then, select the Control Panel and click “Networking and Sharing.” Select a new connection setup, then choose the option for creating “an ad hoc network” as before. Select a name and security key, and confirm what type of security the network has. Finalize by clicking the choice of establishing Internet connection sharing.

You‘ve now turned your laptop into a hotspot!

How To Purchase a $100 Computer

If you’ve ever made the mistake of downloading a file from the Internet without a preliminary virus scan, you (now) know the importance of protecting the contents of your computer. Most people in today’s world experience sheer terror without access to a computer. Depending on the age of your hardware, buying a new computer may make better financial sense than repairing the damage.

Costs to purchase a new computer continue to decline, but mystical visions of the “$100 computer” haven’t become true reality. However, refurbished computers may offer an upgrade from your old computer. Find refurbished computers offered in online auctions, such as those on eBay. Choose sellers with a high percentage of positive feedback. For extra safety, select only those sellers located in the United States. Ask questions before making a purchase.

Use caution when purchasing an ultra-cheap netbook from an international seller. Always check the seller’s feedback and ask questions. For example, your cheap netbook may not have an operating system or some page-reading abilities you take for granted.

Large companies usually provide their employees with up-to-date hardware and continuous software upgrades. If you’ve ever worked at a large company, you know the tech support team on a first-name basis. They’re always dropping by to make sure you’ve got the latest hardware and the latest upgrades.

Refurbished computers make good financial sense for many people. Entrepreneurial resellers buy up obsolete computers at almost no cost from large companies. The hard disks of these computers get wiped clean, and the reseller adds some new software, such as Open Office. If you’re not hankering for the latest, smallest, thinnest laptop, buying a refurbished desk top computer—along with the cost of an annual warranty contract—can cost you $100 or less, including shipping!

The Internet and Productivity

If your business or workplace has internet access, you’ve most likely use it on a daily basis to respond to emails, access company information, or other related tasks. However, when dealing with internet usage at work you have to be careful to ensure that you stay productive.

When checking your email don’t keep reading the same email over and over- read it once, act on it, and move on with your day. If you use social networking sites, allot a certain amount of time each day, and have a goal in mind. Don’t just sit on the internet reloading Twitter all day- have a purpose for being on there. For example, respond to all messages left for you, decide how many people you are going to connect with, and update your status.

Everyone needs a break in order to clear his or her mind. Don’t feel bad if you get sidetracked and end up surfing a news website for a few minutes. But just make sure you have actually completed some work before you do that. If after every hour of work you need a 10-minute internet break- that is fine, as long as your boss isn’t going to get upset. Taking a quick break won’t hurt your productivity, and in fact the mental rest could help increase it because you’ll feel refreshed.

So when keeping productivity in mind, make sure you are actually getting work done. Have concrete work goals set for each day, and make sure you are checking things off of your list before you start to surf the web.

Wireless Hot Spots For Web Workers

These days there are many jobs that allow people to work only using their computer and an internet connection. Freelance writers, graphic designers, web developers, and online consultants are all jobs that don’t necessarily require you to go into an office each day.

Though this technology is great, it can be lonely working at home alone. That’s where wireless hot spots come into the picture. Hot spots allow solo entrepreneurs and independent workers to get out and interact with people, without the expensive costs of setting up a separate office.

Locations such as coffee shops, fast food restaurants, bookstores, and even copy shops offer hot spots. Some offer free Wi-Fi hot spots, while others require you to pay by the hour.

If you decide to work from a place that offers free Wi-Fi then you should plan on patronizing the business. Don’t just setup camp in someone’s place of business without contributing anything. Not only might you get kicked out, but also it’s just a poor practice. If you are going to take up space and use electricity for hours at a time- buy something. It doesn’t have to be a large purchase- a cup of coffee or a magazine will do; just make a good faith effort.

Also, if you decide to use this type of work arrangement, be considerate of others and don’t talk loudly on your cell phone.  If you know you have to talk on the phone a lot, then consider working from home. Working from places with hot spots is best for people who just need to type on their laptops in order to get work done.
